This South African Bobotie Recipe is a lovely dish for a family to share. It is a real South African treat to have. It is part of the traditional South African food menu found at parties.
The first recipe for Bobotie was found in a Dutch cookbook in 1609. The recipe arrived in South Africa in the 17th century. The Cape Malay community adopted the recipe where it became a firm favourite in South African households. A different variant is made using curry leaves which creates a tangy flavour. This is a winter dish and is usually served on chilly winter evenings to warm the family up.
- 2 onions, chopped
- 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1 slice bread
- 1 tbsp. curry powder
- 1 1/2 tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 C golden raisins
- 3 tbsp. chutney
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 1/2 tsp. turmeric
- juice and grated rind of 1/2 lemon
- 6 almonds, quartered
- 1 egg
- 4 bay leaves
- 300ml full cream milk
- Preheat the oven to 350. Sauté the meat with onions until brown. Pour off grease.
- Soak the bread in half of the milk then mash with a fork.
- Combine all the remaining ingredients except the egg, remaining milk, and bay leaves.
- Spread the mixture in a greased casserole and tuck in the bay leaves around the mixture.
- Bake for 1 hour. Remove the bay leaves. Then beat the egg with the remaining half cup of milk and pour-over.
- Return to oven for another half an hour. Serve with steamed rice and chutney.
Serve warm, be careful of the heat when you serve it as the heat will be contained in the egg. Make sure it is cold enough for children to eat.
